NY’s plan: Send frac wastewater to PA
New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation, after 18 months of study, has proposed new regulations, now being circulated for public comment until Dec. 31. And the DEC is recommending that wastewater from drilling sites in New York be sent to Pennsylvania for processing. Two of the 11 out-of-state processing plants recommended for treating New York’s wastewater are right here – in Washington and Waynesburg.
Somehow, this is not surprising. Pennsylvania has been accepting New York City’s solid wastes for years. In fact, some of the height of what we affectionately call “Mount Martin” – the Arden Landfill – can be attributed to garbage trucked here years ago from the Big Apple.
The motto on our state’s license plates could be “The dump starts here.” Or maybe, “You’ve got a dump in Pennsylvania.”
